About National Service Scheme

The National Service Scheme (NSS) was launched in Indra Ganesan College of Engineering in the year 2009.

NSS is one of the most prominent central government schemes implemented under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.

NSS provides opportunities for student youth in 11th and 12th grade at the school level and for technical education graduate and postgraduate students at colleges and universities in India to participate in various government-led community service activities and programs.

To date, since its inception, more than 7.5 crore students have benefited under the Scheme. An NSS volunteer needs to devote a total of 240 hours social service in two years duration. Every year, a NSS volunteer has to devote 20 hrs. of orientation and 100 hrs. of community service.

NSS Objectives

Understand Community

Develop understanding of the community in which they work and their relationship with it.

Identify Needs

Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem-solving.

Develop Capacity

Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and practice national integration.

Leadership Quality

Develop leadership qualities and democratic attitudes while working as a team.

Social Responsibility

Gain skills in mobilizing community participation and acquire leadership qualities.

Knowledge & Skills

Acquire knowledge about the socio-economic conditions of the community.

NSS Activities

NSS activities are organized both on-campus and in nearby communities, encouraging students to understand and address societal issues. Adventure programs are activities undertaken under NSS.
